We’ve canonized Easy Rider and lionized Hunter S. Thompson, but as far as poetry and pure journalism go, few books can match Danny Lyon’s unsullied, uncommercialized and unsentimental account of mid-century biker gangs in Chicago, The Bikeriders. Lyons didn’t merely make friends with the subjects, he became a member of their crew, an experiment in embedded journalism before the term even existed. I was lucky enough to speak to him about his book and his experiences.
